Japanese look for New Year holidays ! [blog]

To us Japanese, this year-end is the period we look for New Year holidays.

Soon after Christmas is over, we will be busy for
the preparation of year-end and New Year holidays.

We do customary year-end house cleaning.
Cleaning of glass windows and ventilator is a must
to say nothing of floor sweeping and wiping.

We eat Soba noodles on New Year’s Eve.

It looks to be a long-lasting custom of Japanese and it will have meaning
but there will be a variety of theories on the matter.

On New Year holidays we eat lots of feast
such as traditional Osechi Ryori (New Year’s cuisine)
composed of various foodstuffs
which will be cooked in advance at the year-end.

And lots of people visit shrine on the New Year’s Day
to pray to God for the good luck and happiness and success
– some of them in Kimono.

It is customary that we throw in a offering box a coin
and ring a bell at a Shinto shrine before to pray.

Some other people will go out to watch the first sunrise of the year.

There are lots of customs of this season among us Japanese
who generally take for about one week as the New Year holidays
– which will be different for example in United States
where they start to work soon after the Christmas is over
and they take holidays only on first day of January
and come back to work from Jan 2nd.

It looks like that Christmas will be most important day
in the countries where Christian is the majority
– they go to church and they spend the precious time
with their family or with precious people together
– it is a special day and stores are basically closed.

But in Japan, Christmas is a day we work just as usual.
We might get together to eat and drink and maybe to sing
among friends or members of same society, etc.
but it will have a slight different meaning – not a special precious day in Japan.

Have a brilliant New Year !!!
