First trip to France Jan 8, 2006 (Sun) at home

Dec 25, 2005 (Sun)
Departed KIX at 12:45 by AF-291 of Air France It was a direct flight up to Paris of about 12 hours and landed Aeroport Charles de Gaulle (CDG 2) by Boeing 777-300 ER.
Then took the following domestic flight up to Nice and stayed the night there.
The time in France was behind Japan by 8 hours.

Dec 26, 2005 (Mon)
At 8:30am our bus started from our Hotel Apogia of Rue Smolett to Promenade des Anglais – coast of Nice where I saw among others 3 hotels with casino along the coast. Nice is one of the famous places in the Cote D’Azur area just like Monaco of F1 racing and Cannes of movie festival, and rich people look to spend there in winter time. If the chance is available in the future, I would definitely like to visit that Grasse of perfume industry which is not away from Nice.

What was surprising was the fact that I actually saw a (perhaps) man swimming in the sea in this frozen winter time. Our tour guide explained us that you should come to the coast in summer time when the coast will change to a “melon” field. After strolling around the coast area, visited Musee Matisse. Then departed to Aix En Provence of about 176 km away. We did not visit the Musee Atelier de Cezanne because of short of time but had a walk along the Course Mirabeau which looks to lead a house Cezanne was born. After that we headed to Avignon of about 80 km away. We visited historycal district of Avignon – Palais des Papes and Pont St-Benezet. The bridge is that Avignon’s bridge famous with the song. I could have a nice photo of the bridge.
We stayed this 2nd night at Mercure Sud hotel of Rue Marie-De-Medicis.

Dec 27, 2005 (Tue)
This 3rd day we started the Avignon’s hotel at 8:00am for the sightseeing of Provence – south France. Firstly headed to Pont de Gard of about 25 km away – a famous water road bridge of Roman era. Perhaps every Japanese would have seen it used for the commercial advertisement in the TV Then, visited next Arles – I had a nice photo of that Le Pont Van Gogh. Also went to Le Café Van Gogh. The Arenes was kept almost in perfect condition. In the afternoon, headed to Lyon of about 272 km apart. When we arrive there, it was almost dark (the sun sets around 5:00pm) and we failed to look at the scenery of that world heritage – historical district of old Lyon from the hill while the sun is in the sky. Just had a quick look at how the old city building was made.
This night I was at a loss how I should order the vin rouge because they showed us a wine list . I tried to consult en francais to a girl and ordered what she recommended but it was not much of a wine. I had so far no problem by saying un pichet de blanc (or rouge), s’il vous plait. If selection is available, it will make me problem because I’m not familiar with the names of French local wines.

Dec 28, 2005 (Wed) snow
This day things got started from Lyon. We headed to Loire region – the longest drive by bus of about 460 km. On the way, we just dropped in Bourges for a short time and saw a new world heritage of cathedral there. In the afternoon, our bus went on toward the Loire where French castles are available everywhere. We firstly arrived and visited Chateau de Chenonceau – an elegant castle And then we went on to another castle – Chateau de Chambord – a very nice one but unfortunately when we arrive there, it has been dark completely after the sunset, and we could not take a good photo. If you want to look around such chateaus well, you act on the basis of nearest town Tours, and it will take perhaps some several days because the chateaus are within the areas of 100 km from Blois to Chinon. I read in a guide book that the visits of 2 to 3 castles would be the limit per day. I felt it with body when we drove up to Chambord Indeed you can find there lots of the other nice castles as well - besides the above-mentioned 2 castles we visited – such as Chateau de Blois, Chateau d’Amboise, Chateau de Cheverny, Chateau de Loches, Chateau de Villandry, Chateau d’Azay-le-Rideau, Chateau d’Usse,
Chateau de Chinon and Chateau de Chaumont, etc.
This night we stayed in Tours.

Dec 29, 2005 (Thu)
Because of news from the local travel agency that another group had trouble visiting Mont St-Michel on 28th affected by the snow, we decided to start this day at 7:15am (instead of original starting time 8:00am) The distance up to Mont St-Michel was about 248 km. I was asleep in the bus and did not notice that we had passed that Le Mans of F1 racing on the way. Fortunately everything was smooth and we could reach that Mont St-Michel without problem. This day we had for lunch that famous omelet with cidre (apple wine). Mont St-Michel was really worthy to be named as world heritage.

In the afternoon, we headed to Rennes of about 70 km apart. From Rennes we took TGV (train grand vitesse) without stop up to Paris. It took about 2 hours up to the station - Gare Montparnasse. Unlike in Japan, there was no announcement of its departure. Then we arrived the hotel – Sofitel Forum Rive Gauche. At last we arrived in a big city but the dishes of the hotel were not what I expected.

Dec 30 (Fri)
This day was for the sightseeing of Paris. In the morning, first of all, we went to Cathedrale Notre Dame de Paris. We went in it and walked its around and found that angle Buffe ever painted. I had a photo of same angle with the painting of Buffe – from the bridge. Then we went to Place de la Concorde, then through Avenue Champs Elysees to Arc de Triomphe. I had a photo in front of the Arc de Triomphe. Then our bus headed to Palais de Chaillot, from there we took a photo of Tour Eiffel.

What I want to dare describe here is that we went to a Japanese restaurant and the Japanese dishes (not a special one – just ordinary one) we had there was so delicious, so I felt in comparison with the other dishes we had and every member of our group complained during the trip of this time.

In the afternoon, we went to Chateau de Versailles of Ile de France. It was perhaps some 20km or so from the center of Paris. It was snowing and very cold this day. So, I did not look around that huge garden but looked every major rooms of 2nd floor to say nothing of that Galerie des Glaces – it was under repare. If next chance is available, I would like to walk the garden of this Louis XIV which was entirely covered by snow this day.

Because the stay in Paris was this one day only, I regret I could not look at Montmartre including Basilique du Sacre-Coeur. What I more regret is that I had no opportunity to see the world famous French culture such as Moulin Rouge and Lido, etc. I got a photo of Olympia I came across while walking between Madeleine and Place de l’Opera

Dec 31, 2005 (Sat)
This day was the day to depart Paris. In the morning in the hotel Ameircan ladies spoke to me in front of the elevator “Are you leaving Paris today ?” Yes, unfortunately.
Perhaps they came today from Chicago to enjoy the year-end day in Paris. After returning home, I read in the newspaper that there were riots in Paris from the night of the 31st till the morning of Jan. 1st and 425 cars were burned. It looks to be habitual in Paris in the year end, just as I heard it from the guide of Paris.

Jan 1, 2006 (Sun) Japan time
I came back home to Osaka after a flight of 9,635km with about 11 hours at the speed of 1,000km/h or a little less around at 960km/h. The airplane was the same Boing 777-300ER of 3 x 3 x 3 seat one line. What I noticed was that most flight attendants were male – not ladies.

Anyway, with the stay of 5 days in France, I feel that my ears got to be more familiar to French speaking sounds than before. I trid to watch French broadcasting rather than CNN in English.
