Uniformity of Japanese [日本人論]
Uniformity of Japanese
In Japan we have a candy called as “Kintaro-ame”.

It is a round bar shaped candy, on its section a face of “Kintaro” will appear whichever part of section you may cut.
Just like the “Kintaro” bar candy, you can see the “uniformity” among us general Japanese people as a special feature.
That’s why we do not have a habit to dare raise an objection to someone else’s opinion unless we find some grave reason we cannot overlook as it is, even if some minor discrepancy is available on its opinion or on its way of thinking.
Rather we have an inclination that we conform to the prevailing general situation. If it’s found that it would be good to conform to the situation, we give priority to the conformity by not uttering our own different idea.
It doesn’t mean that we would be unconditionally accepting the different idea. Simply we will be practicing [harmony] by not showing it an obvious rejection. We have our own independent opinion which will not be expressly uttered.
Such being the inclination among us Japanese, we do not have a chance to do noisy debating among our people. That’s why most of us in general lack the skill to do debating and look as if we were quiet on the surface.
